Are Free Estimates Actually Free?

Here's a question worth asking before you call an electrician who advertises free estimates: free to whom, and free of what, exactly?

The phrase "free estimate" is one of the most common marketing promises in the home services industry. And while it sounds straightforwardly good — who wouldn't want something for free? — the reality is more nuanced. Understanding what a free estimate actually is, and what it isn't, can save you from a frustrating experience when the bill looks nothing like the number you were given upfront.

The economics of free estimates. When a contractor offers a free estimate, they're absorbing the cost of producing it somewhere. Either they spend minimal time on it — producing a rough number that isn't particularly reliable — or they build the cost of estimate visits into their overall pricing, effectively spreading it across all customers. There is no truly free lunch in business. The question is just where the cost appears.

What a free estimate usually buys you. A free estimate is typically a fast, low-investment number. The contractor glances at the job, applies their general experience to produce a rough figure, and gives you something to think about. For very simple, clearly defined tasks, this can be entirely adequate. For complex jobs with variables the contractor hasn't fully investigated — hidden wiring conditions, panel capacity questions, access challenges — the free estimate is a starting point, not a commitment.

The moment free estimates get expensive. It happens during the job. The contractor encounters something they didn't account for in the estimate. Maybe the wiring behind the wall is older than expected. Maybe the panel needs an upgrade to support the new circuit. Maybe the access route they assumed is blocked. And suddenly, the conversation shifts from doing the job to revising the price.

A Better Question Than "Is It Free?"

The right question to ask when engaging an electrician isn't "is the estimate free?" It's "is this number fixed, and what happens if something unexpected comes up?"

Those two questions reveal far more about whether you're dealing with a contractor you can trust.

"Is this number fixed?" If the answer is "it's an estimate, so it could vary," you don't have a price — you have a guess. A contractor who won't commit to a fixed price before starting work is transferring the risk of unknowns from their business to yours. That's not a deal that benefits you.

"What happens if something unexpected comes up?" Every honest contractor has an answer to this question. The best answer is: "We identify everything we can during our assessment and build that into the fixed price. If something truly unforeseen arises — something no reasonable assessment could have caught — we stop, explain the situation, and get your approval before proceeding." What you don't want to hear is: "We'll deal with that when we get there."

At Reliable Electrician, here's our actual position on estimates:

We don't provide free estimates in the traditional sense — because a number produced without properly assessing your home isn't something we're willing to put our name on. What we provide is a fixed, written, all-inclusive quote produced after a proper in-person assessment of your specific situation.

We typically present two to three options, each at a defined price, covering different approaches to your electrical issue. You choose. We execute. The price we quote is the price on the invoice.

Is our assessment visit free? We're transparent about that when you call us. What we can guarantee is that the number you receive from us is worth far more than a free guess — because it's a real commitment you can make a real decision with.
