The economics of free estimates. When a contractor offers a free estimate, they're absorbing the cost of producing it somewhere. Either they spend minimal time on it — producing a rough number that isn't particularly reliable — or they build the cost of estimate visits into their overall pricing, effectively spreading it across all customers. There is no truly free lunch in business. The question is just where the cost appears.

What a free estimate usually buys you. A free estimate is typically a fast, low-investment number. The contractor glances at the job, applies their general experience to produce a rough figure, and gives you something to think about.
